An interesting article. I think the points made therein are valid, but even if it is a failure, how much is it really going to hurt Microsoft? Most stores only sell new machines with Vista. (The last time I asked when laptop-shopping was XP was available through special order. How incredibly lame.)
To downgrade, you'll still have to buy a copy of XP to use. This is a hassle that I'd imagine the bulk of average computer users (People who do some light surfing, maybe eBay shopping, email, no heavy games, a little music) don't care to go through.
If Vista starts becoming a requirement for new, big name games, it would become the choice for people who keep up with that. Or maybe the second machine OS of choice since it's there for, again, just light use.
I doubt it's a huge issue for Microsoft. If they decide to abandon it and release the next Windows within a few years, if they succesfully market it as being "better than Vista was" it would probably sell through the roof, even more so if it actually is "better than Vista was."
