Meat packaging companies have been injecting carbon monoxide into their packages to make the meat appear like it's fresh and good, and it could be as old as a year. I don't have any information handy, but I heard it on Clark Howard today, and he's generally trustworthy on consumer problems.

Unfortunately, you and Clark Howard are right about this. Meat that is a year old! Yuck! I think I will become vegetarian.

By the way, I enjoyed listening to "Les pêcheurs de perles (The Pearl Fishers)" by Georges Bizet. I did not know you like opera!
